SUMMARY OF ELLEN WOOLLEY ARCHITECTS PRIZES & AWARDS

  • Australian Institute of Architects Shortlist for Sugarloaf House 2021  

  • AGDA award for business card design 2008.

  • Architectural Record (USA) House of the Month 2006.

  • Royal Australian Institute of Architects Merit Award for Killlcare 2001.

  • Award (MBFA) for Husker Du II Best Use of Steel 2005.

  • Award (MBFA) for Husker Du II Best Pole Home 2005.

  • National Watershed Gateway Competition Commendation 2004.

  • Royal Australian Institute of Architects Commendation for Lilyfield House 2003.

  • Royal Australian Institute of Architect’s Bronze Medal 1996.

  • Various university prizes and competitions.

 

Sustainability:

  • Energy Australia Smart Home, Newington – design competition winner - showcasing sustainability technologies. Ongoing occupancy evaluation with live occupancy evaluation blog on the web. Variously published including SMH.

  • In 2004 Ellen (with Artist Ali Verban) was shortlisted for designing a footpath + kerb “bioswale” prototype that passively filtered stormwater for recycling (for Newtown)– only now becoming more common in sustainable urban design concepts.

 

Design Critique:

Ellen has lectured and/or tutored at the Queensland University of Technology, University of Technology Sydney, University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney. She was a member of the 2015 AIA NSW Chapter Jury for residential design.

 

Ethics:

Ellen has been a volunteer architect with ‘So They Can’ orchestrating the Aberdare Ranges Public Primary School, High School, and also the Hilton Dump Orphanage in Kenya. She has also been a volunteer for Architects Without Frontiers designing accommodation facilities in Papua New Guinea for Australian Doctors International. She is currently working on a water edge building for the Northbridge Sea Scouts.

AWARD WINNING + PUBLISHED HOUSES

Ellen has a firm base in award winning residential work:     

  • Husker Du II in Forestville received acclaim internationally and nationally, and was selected as House of the Month by Architectural Record (USA), published on the web and selected for Australian Television. Other publications include SMH + various magazines globally.

  • Lilyfield House (by Woolley Tonkin) and received an RAIA Commendation + was extensively published, including cover photographs in SMH and AA,

  • Killcare House (by Woolley Tonkin) received a RAIA Merit Award + was extensively published including SMH and AA.

  • Union House, Fairlight –published in SMH and magazines.

Ellen began her career in Public Architecture working for a number of notable firms:
